Movie Review: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

*Related Update: Carrie Fisher, R.I.P.

Every once in a while a movie catches you completely by surprise.  You go in expecting perhaps nothing more than a mediocre couple hours, and possibly even a complete disappointment, and you walk out thinking “WOW! I really enjoyed that.”  That film, for me, was Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Rogue One is the 2nd Star Wars offering from Disney since buying the franchise as part of a $4 billion purchase of Lucasfilm.  What is essentially Star Wars Episode 3.5, Rogue One fills in the gap between 2005’s Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith, where Anakin Skywalker becomes Darth Vadar, and Episode 4: A New Hope from 1977; what most of us old-timers would call “the original Star Wars.”  I’ll be honest, while I love the Star Wars franchise, I have not been completely interested in it since 1983’s Return of the Jedi.  That could be due to my youth interests at the time, or could be due to the fact that every Star Wars film since then has been relatively weak in comparison.  The simple fact is Episodes 1, 2, 3, and 7 have over-told the story.  They try too hard to give story and character background, and just pile far too much onto the viewer.  And that doesn’t even begin to address the terrible acting featured in all four films.

But Rogue One is different.  It isn’t burdened with a huge backstory to tell because its time frame is very small.  The film tells the story of how the Rebel Alliance steals the plans for the Death Star and smuggles them to Princess Leia.  Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) stars as Jyn Erso–daughter of Galen Erso, the primary architect of the Death Star.  Jyn meets up with Rebel Alliance Captain, Cassian Andor (Diego Luna – Open Range), and his droid, K-2SO (Alan Tudyk – A Knight’s Tale), and together with members of “an estranged radical movement within the rebellion” (H/T commenter Dead Rabbit) and a renegade Imperial pilot, the pair cause a fury of chaos and destruction as they locate, penetrate, and raid the Empire base that holds the coveted Death Star plans.  No less than the full power of the Empire, including the notorious Darth Vader, stand in their way.

Director Gareth Edwards, a relative newcomer, does a fantastic job bringing writer Chris Weitz’s story to life.  The sets were not overly expansive, but loaded with believable detail, even for a science fiction film. The special effects were of the quality one comes to expect from the masters at Disney and Lucasfilm, even bringing to believable CGI life the long-deceased Peter Cushing as the face of Grand Moff Tarkin and a young Carrie Fisher as the face of Princess Leia.

Rogue One has chases, shootouts, dogfights, and tense, palm-sweating drama and excitement that makes it one of the most enjoyable films I have seen in quite a while.  The film is rated PG-13, but that is probably because of its laser-blasted violence.  To be honest, I didn’t see anything that younger viewers would need to be sheltered from.  As a special treat, we watched it in 3D and had DBOX seats.  This did accent the experience but wasn’t worth the added cost.  The film stands on its own just fine without those extras. But, with that stated, seeing and hearing it in a theater environment is an absolute must, so don’t wait long, as it is already in its second week.

  1. It would indeed surprise me if I liked another SW film.

But I did just watch a recent HBO miniseries called “The Night Of” that is the most riveting feature I have seen in quite some time. Im glad I didn’t watch it when it first aired (I think over the summer) because it would have been torture to wait a week in between episodes.

I don’t remember it coming up here. I thought the writing was outstanding and the pacing pitch perfect. You could watch it over two nights without OD-ing on it (after the kids are in bed though.)

Formidable acting too. Fucking great. No big boring names either – the most recognizable being John Turturro.

  2. I’m going to check that out after I finish Westworld, Muffy.

Darth Vader, although in limited supply, was so gratifying in Rogue. I liked how he gave off a tone that he was only, himself, 50% invested in the Death Star.

  3. Huck writes better reviews than the “professionals.” 😆

I was one who saw the first Star Wars flick in the theater, probably four times. V & VI I probably only saw once. Nothing ever quite captured the magic for me as the first one. But both V & VI were so much better than I – III that I begin to lose interest in the franchise.

I have no idea why VII got such great reviews. I found myself looking at my watch while we sat through it, a politically correct rehash of the very first one. I’ve never seen it again, nor do I intend to.

We didn’t get a chance to go over Christmas this year. My wife and daughter left this morning to go see oldest daughter, son-in-law, and baby to babysit for two doctors over the holidays. Won’t see my wife until next year. Makes me blue as I am left with two dogs whom I love, but they ain’t my sweet wife.

But I will bet by the middle of January, I will have my butt parked in a theater seat to watch VII. And I bet I will like it since the author and I have the same tastes in movies apparently.

  4. I like Huck’s reviews. This one might persuade me to watch the movie, but the first of the series which we watched in a theater spoiled me.

None of the others matched the first. It was almost like replacing a loyal dog which died of old age.

Our son in law loved the movie. Our daughter wasn’t interested. I have no plans to watch another Star Wars movie in the near future, but I did like the review.

  5. This is really nothing like the others. If you found yourself turned off by the post-original Star Wars films, it’s all the more reason to see this one.

  6. I saw the first one when it came out. Like Tex, plenty of my friends saw it multiple times. Not being a big movie buff, once is usually enough for me. Over the years I have them multiple times. SW has become an integral part of our culture. How many spin offs has it offered? I did see Space Balls a number of times.

Huck’s review makes me want to check it out, but I won’t wait in line.

  7. “This is really nothing like the others. If you found yourself turned off by the post-original Star Wars films, it’s all the more reason to see this one.”

I could see somebody simply burned out on Star Wars to the point that this new movie also falls flat.

If there is nothing in you that likes Star Wars anymore (or never was), it should be skipped.

Also… it’s obviously a movie primarily for a 11 to 13 year old audiance (with enough nostalgia or little details on the outer flanks to rope in the old people).

Actually, Episodes 1-3 suffered from uninspired acting, but the absolute worst flaw was the Lucas dialogue. He should never, ever, EVER be permitted to write dialogue ever again. I can’t say he was trying to over-story as much as he wanted the audience to love the characters as much as he did, which really isn’t the same thing. Success permitted him indulgence, and he did not have the same forces of frugality and studio pressure shaping the story as he did for the first movie.

Like Tex, I thought that 7 really embodied a facile “reimagining” of the first one, with the obligatory “gurl power” “twist” that society is so enamored with these days. As I watched it, I had to wonder what all of the damn hype was about. On a day when I’m feeling charitable, I doubt I could give it more than 2 stars.

Final note: It’s “Vader”, not “Vadar”.

  9. Also, if you want to be reminded of the power of Sci-Fi to tell a compelling story that can keep you wanting more, I recommend Season One of “The Expanse”, which I got for Christmas on Blu-Ray.

A great mystery, interesting characters who get peeled back, layer by layer, slowly, like a strip-tease, and excellent production values.

  10. I only go see movies in the morning. Theater to myself. No lines. Manspread all over that bitch. Fill a empty pop cup with Copenhagen spit. I’m the motherfuckin early morning celebrity.

  11. “The Expanse” sounds interesting.

It is sad about Carrie Fisher. My enduring image her is her carrying a message asking for help.

I read that “Star Wars” may be an allegory including the United States, but the writer discounted the argument.

  12. If the reports off the plane were accurate, I knew Fisher was dead. They simply kept her breathing the last few days. Sad. You can’t go 10 minutes without oxygen unless you’re submerged in a frozen pond, or something.

Poor, little rich girl who got caught up in the filth called Hollywood – and another example of apparently fame isn’t all it is cracked up to be.

Fisher was a cutie when I was a kid and she was a kid. 21 years old when she did the first Star Wars – had to believe because she seemed such an “adult” to me as a high school boner. But it was pretty obvious Fisher had lived an incredibly hard life from that last movie.

  13. From previous thread:

WTF????? I just saw another Humira ad, this time for arthritis. How many ailments is this thing prescribed for????

Anything that is an auto immune disease, I suspect. What Rabbit has is not dissimilar in a way to rheumatoid arthritis – both are attributable to the body’s immune system attacking itself. That’s why Rabbit has been more vulnerable to getting sick. Humira (and others) work by suppressing the immune system.

  14. The Star Wars series started to piss me off with all the time shifting. Finding out that what I thought was SW 1, 2 and 3 was actually 4, 5 and 6 was irritating and now I’ve totally lost track of what happens when. I got a kick out of Huck referring to this one as 3.5.

Muffy is right – “The Night Of” was excellent and John Turturro with his feet problems was a kick.

As for Huck’s film reviews: he could easily be a film critic for a newspaper.

  15. Tex nailed it. I have psoriatic arthritis and psoriasis.

Humira put it in 99.9% remission.

I’ve been off of it for 5 weeks and no signs of it. Part of me wants to wait and see if the shit didn’t go into permanent magical remission, although unlikely.

Humira is also awesome because company pays my entire deductible for me! I make money taking it.

After I got psoriasis on my dick…I threw the in the towel and requested the shots. Fuck that. I couldn’t bear to make my wife perform oral sex on one of the aliens from the mini series V. By then I was getting to the point my lesions could almost sort of fossilize. Plus, my shoulder joints were killing me.

  16. “I couldn’t bear to make my wife perform oral sex on one of the aliens from the mini series V. By then I was getting to the point my lesions could almost sort of fossilize.”

    😆 😆 😆

Maybe you’re just being a little too hard on yourself. Why I’m sure some women find fossilized pecker lessons really hot.

    Thanks for sharing.

  17. I know there’s a “get hard” joke in there somewhere, I just can’t bring myself to envision things enough to think of it.

  18. I’m copying Rabbit’s comment from the prior thread here not because I agree with all of it but. because it’s one of the best things he’s written in the history of the blog. I’m not kidding.

The Obama administration is pro Palestinian. Obama lives and breathes the anti colonialist, anti Zionist, frothy anger of academia.
I get it. You read Things Fall Apart and (rightfully) weep for Okonkwo. You move on to Edward Said and see it all maaaan. A screening of the classic Battle of Algiers even makes you feel for the terrorists. Look over to Israel, look over to 1980’s South Africa. Look back at Israel. And you are on the “good” fight train for life.
Except there is one problem. These Palestinians want to drive the Jews into the sea. Repeat. They want to drive the Jews into the sea. They will never stop. Ever. The entire reason Israel has this land is because they are attacked incessantly.
Get to know the Paletinians outside the campus. They will tell you the truth.
Let me take that back. Palestinian, my ass. They are Arabs. They could have joined Jordan, but Jordan decided to slaughter them. Saddam Hussein decided to slaughter them. Usefull tools, stripped Phillips screwdrivers, often get treated that way.
The Arab states never want it solved, anyway. Palestinian Arabs exist to prop a great release valve for their shitty societies to vent on: Evil Israel. Evil Israel, the Oasis of freedom and civilization amongst a post apocalyptic, barbaric wasteland of shit.
I do feel sorry for the Arabs of the Holy Land. I am aware of a history that wasn’t always like this. Muslims honor bound to protect churchs etc. Those days are gone. Just has I feel sorry for every other dysfunctional and debased family in America, what I don’t do is give them permission to BBQ on my deck. Or ensure it’s easier to access my house. Because my family comes first and I live in a real and brutal world.

  19. because it’s one of the best things he’s written in the history of the blog.

That bar is pretty low, for sure. I read it as alcohol induced. No?

  20. I like rabbit’s comment. Thanks for dredging it up.

Doctors told me to apply for a disability when I left the service because they were sure arthritis would render my right hand useless by age 50. I have no arthritis.
    .

  21. Obama’s bullshit is going to start a war when Israel decides it can no longer wait things out until Jan. 20 and it annexes the West Bank.

As it is, Israel is thinking Obama’s next step might be to put forth (secretly or overtly) a UN resolution formally declaring and recognizing a Palestinian state. This thinking is so strong that Kerry had to deny it, today. He also denied the US met with the Palestinians before this recent UN fiasco, and even the Palestinians said he was lying.

As I said, this type of wishy-washy bullshit breeds distrust and confusion, and those things breed conflict. Obama had 8 years to address this. He chose to invest his time and political capital in other things. Now, with a month left, he is trying to strong-arm the situation.

It won’t work and people will die. Their blood will be squarely on Barack Obama.

  22. I think it’s disheartening that everyone is so quick to believe Bibi’s conspiracy theories and call Obama and Kerry liars. And the cherry on the sundae is citing the Palestinians as credible when in the next breath we root for Israel to dislodge them.

The only problem I see now is the bizarre timing. Obama should have explicitly told Bibi to go fuck himself long ago. Maybe we should stop the BILLIONS in aid so Bibi understands what real abandonment feels like.

  23. “I think it’s disheartening that everyone is so quick to believe Bibi’s conspiracy theories and call Obama and Kerry liars”

Did you type that with a straight face?

  24. Rutherford, I think you know better than to think I have any love for Benjamin Netanyahu or a lot of Israeli policy regarding Palestinians.

You need to separate yourself from your Obama love and look at this objectively.

“Obama should have explicitly told Bibi to go fuck himself long ago. Maybe we should stop the BILLIONS in aid so Bibi understands what real abandonment feels like.”

Yes. He should have. But he didn’t, did he?

    Because he’s a coward.

  25. Rutherford, look back at my original comment on this. I told you Obama was behind the entire thing even before Bibi started talking about it.

    It wasn’t difficult to see.

  26. Rutherford thinks the world hates Obama so much that the Palestinians are going to back up a lie told by Israel even when Obama is leading them toward their own state.

    C’mon man…..

  27. The steroid Prediszone makes me a very nasty person to be around. I have an urge to verbally abuse women, physically abuse men and do both to poolman.

  28. Maybe we should stop the BILLIONS in aid so Bibi understands what real abandonment feels like.

When every damn day is the Alamo, I’m pretty sure you don’t give two shits what the proprietor of a blog in another country thinks “abandonment” is.

As for Lord Zero and his propensity to be a wheezing bag of diseased dick tips, I always think of this scene…the good people are Shunderson, Obama is Professor Elwell.

  29. “When every damn day is the Alamo, I’m pretty sure you don’t give two shits what the proprietor of a blog in another country thinks “abandonment” is.”

But when you’re getting billions in aid that suddenly gets cut off I’m pretty sure you do give 2 shits about what the check writer thinks.

  30. Is that the best reply you can muster? Maybe you should go lie down, you seem a bit weak.

For 1, we’ve had that discussion in detail. Go scour past comment threads before your much-needed nap.

I also don’t see anything resembling “outrage” in my comment. In fact, any outrage I have displayed here is pointed at Obama.

The fact is multiple presidents from both parties have brought up that foreign aid when talking about Israel curbing settlements and Israel laughs because they know none of them will do it. All my point is, is that you don’t change what you regard as bad behavior (and its been longstanding US policy that the settlements are not good behavior) by continuing to give rewards.

  31. No one ever talks about these Jews…

    http://www.nkusa.org/

On behalf of anti-Zionist Jews worldwide, we of Neturei Karta International, Jews United Against Zionism, greet with enthusiasm the recent United Nations Security Council resolution 2334 condemning Israeli settlements as illegal. For decades, the settlements have been a major cause for bloodshed and unrest in the Holy Land. Hundreds of innocent lives have been sacrificed on the altar of nationalism and lust for land. We congratulate the countries in the Security Council for taking this long-overdue step toward justice and peace. And in particular, we congratulate the President of the State of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas, on his success in achieving the passage of this resolution.

At the same time, we wish to reiterate the Torah position that it is not just the West Bank that is illegally occupied. Jews have been sent into exile by the Almighty, and any kind of Jewish sovereignty over any territory is a violation of that decree. Therefore the concept of the State of Israel is entirely illegitimate and forbidden. The crime is compounded when the creation of this homeland entails the occupation, oppression, subjugation and expulsion of another people. Before the era of Zionism, Jews lived in Palestine in peace and security, side by side with the Palestinian Arab population. We fervently hope for the day when Jews return to abiding by the laws of the Torah and living in peace with all peoples.

As Jews, we have always been especially pained by the actions of the State of Israel in general, and the radical settlers in particular, since they claim to be acting in our name.

Predictably, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has reacted with anger to this clear demonstration of unanimous world opinion against his state’s crimes. Drawing on Jewish themes, he has cast himself in the role of the Maccabee fighters whose victories we celebrate on Chanukah, and the Security Council nations as their enemies. Let no one be fooled. The State of Israel has nothing to do with Judaism, and on the contrary, it has consistently tried to extinguish Torah observance and values. The Torah values life and service of the Almighty, while Zionism values land conquest and secular culture. The Maccabees did not go to battle for freedom or independence; they wanted only the right to continue to practice Judaism. If any comparison is to be made to the Chanukah story, it is of Netanyahu and his fellow Zionists to the enemies of the Jewish people in the time of the Maccabees.

Netanyahu has vowed to continue building settlements, but we appeal to the world to realize that the Jewish people in general are not behind him. This show of defiance against the world community and the United States for taking up a just cause is completely against the Torah. American Orthodox Jews in particular, as loyal citizens enjoined by the Torah to respect their president, are embarrassed and completely disgusted by Netanyahu and his supporters’ vicious attacks on President Obama.

We also wish to state that the Zionists have no right to control the Western Wall and other holy sites of Jerusalem. All claims the Israeli government makes to these places are baseless. Furthermore, the recent U.N. General Assembly resolution that the State of Israel has no right to impose its laws on these places, in no way detracts from the holiness of these sites in the eyes of Jews.

In these days of Chanukah, may the Almighty send a spirit of repentance into Jewish hearts, so that they look into the Torah and resolve to follow its guidance. And may we be privileged to see peace in the Middle East and the entire world. Amen.

  32. When every damn day is the Alamo, I’m pretty sure you don’t give two shits what the proprietor of a blog in another country thinks “abandonment” is.

Kinda silly, dontcha think? I have no illusions about Bibi reading my blog.

The bottom line is Israel has no better friend than the USA and that includes during the Obama “regime”. Bibi is an ungrateful arrogant fuck.

This kerfuffle may indeed be more Obama v Netanyahu as opposed to USA v Israel. Tigre may be onto something. Bibi thinks Barack is an uppity Negro and Barack thinks Bibi is a pushy Jew. They both need to grow the fuck up.

Meanwhile, at noon on January 20, 2017 the two state solution will officially die much to the delight of BiC and many others here.

  33. R calling somebody else out as dumb is a bit like Michael Moore calling somebody out as a big fat liberal slob. Theres exactly one person here dumber than Rutherford and it isnt me.

Now whine about being picked on, Couchboy.

  34. I agree with Huck about the settlements and Muffy about Obama’s not being our friend. Such conclusions rank with knowing the sky is usually blue.

I had two weeks of steroids to get rid of a rash of unknown origin on my hand. The initial injection came from the largest needle I remember being used on me.

I had no roid rage. I was so energized I didn’t sleep, and I felt really good.

I count my blessings after BIC’s writing that he had the begining of arthritis at 39.

  35. Obama is a friend to our enemies and an enemy to our friends. So, no different than his domestic policy.

Maybe we should stop the BILLIONS in funding for the UN so it understands what real abandonment feels like.

Fuck Obama and the other pussy, Kerry. Oh, I’m sure they didn’t lie this time either Rutherford.

  36. “I also agree that the dispute may be more personal than political.”

It’s as much personal as it is ideological.

He did a fine job with Britain too.

Are we done honoring Castro’s lifetime of great works?

  37. “I had no roid rage. I was so energized I didn’t sleep, and I felt really good.”

Hey James, I just asked my brother about that because my memory of the injections were the same. My pharmacist brother told me the injections often times don’t give people the rage like the pills.

  38. I get it’s sliced. But, I swear the man stuck his tongue out slot for real. Uh..Wtf? Do we all do that? And if not….What was that?

  39. My argument against getting out of the UN used to be “then who would protect Israel there?”

Obama’s week makes that argument disappear, but it will again be valid on Jan. 20.

  40. Now whine about being picked on, Couchboy.

You’re truly Tex with a vagina when it comes to your reaction to criticism.

Wanna know how dumb you are?

Cut funding to all nations and the UN.

That would mean cutting funding to Israel. That would make us no friend to Israel right? The “old Muffy” was kinder and smarter. I miss her.

  41. Our foreign aid policy needs to be adjusted with a scalpel, not a sledgehammer.

And I wasn’t suggesting to cut Israel’s aid as much as I was suggesting to use it as leverage, as we should be doing with everyone we give aid to. If you want our money, then our policy influence comes with it.

  42. My argument against getting out of the UN used to be “then who would protect Israel there?”

The argument should be “Would the Useless Nitwits matter without U.S. participation and funding?”

Consider The League of Nations when you answer, and show your work.

  43. If Israel (the rogue racist state established in 1948) was truly God’s chosen, they wouldn’t need anything from us. No amount of money. No nukes. Nor the control of our military to perform their Yinon expansion plan.

God always did battle for them when they were right with Him.

  44. Yes, cut funding to all nations and the UN. If the UN wants the US in it shouldnt cost us extra. Yes cut funding to Israel or take a fucking stand. Criticize that.

Lazyboy is KrAZyboy without the bong.

  45. The UN might fail without US participation, but it wouldn’t be an immediate process and before it went kaput there would certainly be a recognized Palestinian state.

  46. “The UN might fail without US participation, but it wouldn’t be an immediate process and before it went kaput there would certainly be a recognized Palestinian state.”

    As far as we’re concerned?

    Good job Obama. Asshole.

  47. “As far as we’re concerned?”

There are countries that don’t recognize the State of Israel, but that doesn’t stop it from existing, does it?

If we pull out of the UN it will guarantee a Palestinian state. That none of the other P5 vetoed the recent resolution should be enough proof of that statement.

  48. Thanks, for the information, rabbit. You know more about this than I do.

Besides the shot, I took two pills three times a day with steroid salve. Then, it was two pills twice a day and later one pill once a day until last week when they were gone.

  49. I think our aid should come with strings attached as Huck wrote. The same applies to the UN. They give us good reason to take our money or we spend the money on ourselves. Perhaps they might get rid of their corruption.

I used to think the UN was keeping us from nuclear war, but protagonists seem to be doing the job on their own.

  50. I understand Huck. But if the UN fails, they could vote Obama in as a member of the Rat Pack and it gonna give him a show on the strip.

  51. But they wouldn’t get 190 other countries to recognize that.

All I’m saying is once that genie is out of the bottle it won’t matter, and (at least before this week) we are the cork.

  52. My experience with steroids was similar to James. I think I took them for bursitis in my elbow several years ago. Or it may have been for my lungs. I don’t remember. I was high as a kite. Super-energized. No feelings of aggression. I don’t remember if it was pills or an injection.

  53. “You all know even the Reagan Administration abstained on UN resolutions concerning Israel and that those resolutions passed-right?”

In the last 3 weeks of his administration and in support of Palestine?

    What were the resolutions?

  54. Timing doesn’t matter:
Reagan Admin voted YES UNSC Resolution 487 condemning Israels assault on Iraq nuclear site
Reagan Admin voted YES UNSC Resolution 497 which called Israels annexation of the Golan Heights illegal.
Reagan Admin voted YES UNSC Resolution 509 demanding Israel withdraw from Lebanon
Reagan Admin voted didn’t participate at all for UNSC Resolution 515 which called for Israel to lift a blockade of Beirut for humanitarian aid. Israel chose not to accept the resolution, kind of like how I doubt Bibi is going to accept the recent one.
Reagan Admin abstained from UNSC Resolution 517 calling to censure Israel for failing to withdraw from Beirut.
I could list the Bush I&II series as well.
The truth is folks are just biting at anti- Obama Bibi cookies and fake news. Sad.

  55. I don’t think you have in fact in the prior thread you denied saying people were going to die. So which is it now?
I’m seriously curious since I don’t want Americans dying for Israelis or any other one of the various sand-nigger sub-species.

  56. Installing a double oven where there used to be a single oven is a pain in the ass. It will take forever for this wood putty to dry and when I take an orbital sander to it, it will be a fricking mess.

Rutherford, I did my brotherly love thing for the black man today.

Fricking Home Depot wouldn’t comply with my wishes, so I was forced to dispose of my own oven. I took the 110lbs oven down to the bad, bad part of town in my chit truck – the metal scrap yard. Me, a couple of homeless copper thieves it looked like, and about a 100 of the brothers.

All I wanted to do was get rid of the thing. Some brother gave me directions and drove me there while I followed his forklift over scrap metal and around massive equipment. I told him I would give him the money they were giving me for scrap if he would simply dispose of it for me.

Went to office and they gave me $4.50. 😆 I drove back to give the young man $4.50. 🙂

I think he shit a brick when he saw this literate white guy with $4.00 crisp bills handing out the window when I drove by. I get the impression I was the only honest white guy he ever met. Probably kept me from getting mugged by the rest of them.

Damn, some lily white like me doesn’t even know these places exist. Bullet proof windows, steel, filthy doors to walk through, and the rest of the humans smelled like body funk and grease – not able to come up with ID to get their reimbursements.

    Lucky. I was born lucky.

  57. Timing is everything, this time.

Obama is a narcissist capable of doing something…anything (always in a passive agressive and thus confusing way) to try to hastly patch up his tattered legacy quilt. all in the last few days.

  58. No it really doesn’t. What matters is that the Obama Administration stayed true to its position supporting the “two-state” solution and on its last UN vote did so as well. Other times the O has actually vetoed resolutions aimed at Israel (S/2011/24)
I am absolutely AMAZED how tunnel vision you guys are on your support of Israel OVER the best interests of the USA.

FWIW I’m all in for Bibi to just confess that he is a fucking liar, never accepted the “Road Map” and unleash the IDF on the Palestinians. Genocide ’em all or relocate them to Madagascar or somewhere and have his one state. There really is no other solution but that final one.No matter what we need to be out of it.

  59. Well, why is Obama pretending his hands were clean of this resolution? And why is Obama so shitty at pretending his hands are clean of this resolution? Is this an example of Alfie’s great Realpolitik? Fucking joke. Obama is taking a fart gun and shooting himself in the face. It’s weak. And desperate. It reeks.

  60. The truth is folks are just biting at anti- Obama Bibi cookies and fake news. Sad.

Thanks for adding some meat to my hunch. It smelled like end of term Obama Derangement Syndrome to me.

P.S. I’m not a fan of abstaining. I would have preferred an outright yes vote. Abstaining is for pussies.

  61. Until there is in fact “iron clad proof” that the USA initiated this resolution I gotta go with that other than the USA & Israel the other countries in the UN sandbox consistently brings up the issue of settlements,Palestinians and Israel.
If Obama was really going to tip the scales on this issue at the last minute he would’ve told Powers to vote YES.

  62. Yes it fucking does.

Obama colluded and is lying about it. The fact that he did is proof enough that it matters.

He vetoed similar bullshit in 2011.

He can let Trump set the policy. Instead, he pushed the agenda to spit in his face.

    Obama’s a pussy.

  63. Yes cut funding to Israel or take a fucking stand.

Alfie kinda gave the right answer on this one. Let’s just stop pussyfooting around and acknowledge Bibi doesn’t want a 2 state solution. Let him drive the Palis into the sea, or wherever and be done with it. One united Israel and anyone who doesn’t like it can go fuck themselves.

I’ve been taking (against my will) a couple of PM courses this week and one surefire way to ruin a project is lack of clarity on objectives. Bibi needs to be clear on objectives and follow through. We either stand with him or get out of the way.

  64. Obama colluded and is lying about it. The fact that he did is proof enough that it matters.

You don’t know shit about collusion. Stop mouthing off.

As for Russia, if Obama did nothing about Russian hacking you’d call him a pussy. The guy can’t win with you.

  65. There’s a simple bottom line with you, Tigre. You just don’t like the guy. Obama could personally exempt YOU from any taxes this year and you’d call him an asshole. He could pay your kids college tuitions out of his own pocket and you’d call him an asshole.

You just don’t like the guy. For some reason, it’s personal with you. He probably reminds you of some punk you went to college or law school with. You’re as far from objective on Obama as is humanly possible.

  66. Obama is taking a fart gun and shooting himself in the face.

Ok, that made me laugh out loud. Probably has something to do with spending almost 4 hours putting together Amendments to to integrated AIA contracts today.

I could use a drink. Too bad I have a cold and don’t dare.

P.S. I’m not a fan of abstaining. I would have preferred an outright yes vote. Abstaining is for pussies.

It’s in line with his established pattern. He did in the Ill-uh-noize legislature, and in the Senate.

Unless it was in favor of killing babies. He was all for that shit.

  67. But you want them to have id to vote? 😉

You don’t know your demographics. Those people don’t vote. Most are likely homeless. They do all they can to stay off the grid. That underground population has exploded since the magic negro took office.

  68. “Until there is in fact “iron clad proof” that the USA initiated this resolution”

Fair enough. I love this modern world. We’ll have your iron clad soon enough. We have some pretty good evidence right now already.

“You don’t know shit about collusion. Stop mouthing off” -R

Yeah we do. Obama said they weren’t involved in the collusion. Because of that, we now know they were. Don’t you remember.
    It’s. Always. A. Lie.

    ALWAYS

    And they always get caught.

World’s biggest liar. World’s worst liar.

Ooooooooh. Russian hacking of Podesta’s gmail account. Through lame ass phishing or click bait shit. Lol. You fool. You think we aren’t doing the same hacking? That is small potatoes stuff. He’ll, up until it hurt Obama’s ego, I bet dollars to donuts there was an unspoken awknowledgment of it from both sides that often came with a tip of a hat. Same thing with short wave radio numbers broadcasts of yesteryear.

    They hacked Podesta’s gmail. Lol.

Oh oh oh…. then these same fucks tell us the Secretary of State’s rogue server magically WASN’T hacked and it’s the Russians fault Trump won.

    Lololol

Yeah, because it’s perfectly acceptable to expect him to bargain with people who refuse to take “Kill all the jews” out of their mission statements.

The guy was killing terrorists at the same point in his life where Obama was killing brain cells with choom. He’s never pretended to be something he isn’t, and he’s as aware as anyone that a “two-state solution” with people who want his people dead, and who have turned everything handed over to them already in this “peace (capitulation) process” to shit has about as much chance as happening as Obama suddenly becoming both magnanimous and smart.

  70. “You don’t know shit about collusion. Stop mouthing off.”

LOL. Okaaaaay. I’ll stop mouthing off and presume the evidence isn’t there like you do. Words of wisdom from the nothingburger guy. This is rich.

“You just don’t like the guy.”

Really??? You get that out what I’ve said? Must have been all of the nuance you pieced together when I explicitly said on numerous occasions that I fucking hate, loathe and despise the guy. He’s a piece of shit on every level. He’s dishonest, narcissistic, lazy, a fraud, he has labeled half the country his enemy despite accepting the job of leading them by consent, his objectives and motives are impure, he’s immature, shortsighted, vindictive, plays fools like you for a fool, he’s a pussy, petty, incompetent, and he’s your hero. He’s a total cunt and has inflicted irreparable soul crushing damage on huge segments of America and couldn’t care less. But other than that, I think very highly of him.

I guess that makes me a racist.

I marvel at your ability to have decoded all of that. Very insightful.

    Go read a book, dingbat.

  71. “As for Russia, if Obama did nothing about Russian hacking you’d call him a pussy.”

You’re right. I think I’ve made my position on his pussiness pretty clear. Let me spare you all of the cogitation concerning my opinion of the guy: he’s a pussy.

  72. “in the prior thread you denied saying people were going to die”

I think we might be having miscommunication.

    “Reagan Admin voted YES…”

None of those things further an eventual Palestinian state. I think that’s the dangerous area here. Not that I don’t think they shouldn’t or never will get one, but I don’t agree with Obama’s seeming methods of forcing it. And I do think that’s what he’s doing.

If Bibi thinks so too, he might say “fuck it” and annex the West Bank to preempt that. People will die.

And even if Bibi doesn’t, if the state is created in the UN rather than through negotiations…people will die.

And once the state is created, there is still Hamas, who won’t tolerate a state run by Fatah.

All that needs to be worked out and Obama is rushing past that process. That’s why I say what I say.

  73. “No matter what we need to be out of it.”

On this we agree, and I’m not claiming Americans are the ones that will be doing the dying.

  74. “This is the question I haven’t seen the press corps ask; needless to say, the administration hasn’t answered it. Why didn’t Obama impose sanctions on Russia in October 2014, when, by the administration’s own account, the Russian government hacked into both the White House’s and the State Department’s computers? This was a much more serious infraction than invading Debbie Wasserman-Schultz’s emails. Yet it drew zero response from Obama, who seemed more interested in covering up an embarrassing episode than in punishing the Russians.

Given that history, it is hard to disagree with Russian spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who said:

We think that such steps by a U.S. administration that has three weeks left to work are aimed at two things: to further harm Russian-American ties, which are at a low point as it is, as well as, obviously, to deal a blow to the foreign policy plans of the incoming administration of the president-elect.”

    Yeah. I wonder.

  75. “Don’t you remember. It’s. Always. A. Lie.”

He’s right. The number of proven lies told by this administration is staggering.

  76. The lies began WAAAAAYYYY before this administration. Bobo only made them more apparent. It was some of that transparency he promised us.

  77. Obama lied about his campaign to discredit Israel and the funding of an organization to unseat Netanyahu in the last election, lied about the cash pallets it sent to Iran as ransom, and lied about his secret side deals with Iran. We should believe him now? Pfffft.

  78. We can always assume he’s a pussy too.

Why didn’t he go after Russia in 2014 when they hacked the WH and State Dept.? Because he’d have to deal with the repercussions and his stupid assessment of his relations with Putin for a long period of time. Just like admitting the rise of the JV team. Now he takes a dump and runs off. Such a pussy.

  79. “Why didn’t he go after Russia in 2014 when they hacked the WH and State Dept.?”

It was too soon after the 80s called him and he’d have to admit he was full of shit in the debate.

Nobody calls him on it now because they are able to distract everyone with the Trump squirrel.

  80. Remember when the Rutherford types swooned that Obama was going to usher in world peace and repair all those broken relationships that BushMcChimpyHitler and Darth Cheney had ruined? Snort….

Rutherford has gotten so jaded to the razzing he’s become almost numb. But I love to kick sand in the faces of those self-identifying stooges that peed themselves over Bongo’s magic. They just speak in tongues.

22 days until we serenade that sack of shit with Nah Nah Nah Nah, Hey Hey, Goodbye.

  81. “Russia hacks the Pentagon, Obama says the greatest threat to US security is climate change. Learn that Donna Brazile leaked questions to influence election in debate performance? War”

Lol. So true. Probably not acceptable I think it’s funny.. Because it shouldn’t be.

  82. “Russia hacks the Pentagon, Obama says the greatest threat to US security is climate change. Learn that Donna Brazile leaked questions to influence election in debate performance? War”

And Democrats still think Trump is going to start wars because of Twitter.

  83. Another year since of the age of 12 I will attempt at quiting habitual nicotine intake. Sure….It hasn’t been the cigs in about a decade…And cigars aren’t a problem. It’s the dip. Always back to the dip, one way or the other. I’m a very weak man dealing with portion of my brain still attatched to an 11 year old hooked on nicotine. Rewiring possible?

When I was handing out the candy at Halloween this year, the rest of the fam out trick or treating, I popped a big dip in. It instantly sparked a memory of me doing the same damn thing in Halloween ’87! Same fucking scenario! And I had the same relaxed feeling in 2016! WTF.

And don’t feel sorry for 11 year old Dead Rabbit. I swear to you I was completely aware of the consequences, back then. I wasn’t duped or tricked.

  84. @ Huck thanks for the follow through. I accept the Israeli Palestinian thing as a multi angle proxy manure heap. One of those angles has the civilized world patting itself on rhe back over the Road Map and 2 State model. The right wing of the USA and Israel never intended to accept this and that’s just fact.
Israel cannot integrate the Palis secondary the uterine bomb and won’t allow the 2 state to happen. Ergo the reprise of the Final Solution.

  85. The Russians said that even the United States wants to be freed from this “hapless” regime. Obama’s reign of errors and lies will soon end, but the stench will linger.

Why should Bibi support a two nation solution when one potential nation has vowed to destroy the other? He would be as foolish as our Islam- loving president to help murderers kill his people.

  86. I wish you success rabbit. I quit nicotine cold turkey, though cannabis helped. A 25 year habit gone 18 years ago. You just have to get serious with your flesh and let it know who is boss. it will always resist you first. The urge took a few years to go away but each passing day made it easier to ignore until one day it was gone. Today the smell of burning cigarettes turns my stomach. I’m not a gum chewer. I never dipped. The girls I knew didn’t think that was cool and I did not want to upset any potential encounters. 😉

  87. I am pretty much in line with Alf ie’s opinion regarding Israel. The church in America has for the most part lost its bearings. Many, especially evangelicals, support the rogue state of Israel. They believe somehow it is the same Israel as written in the Bible. But then, they have been compromised severely and mostly operate from human power. They are not a threat to darkness.

  88. And the globe earth lie is HUUUUUUUGGGGGGGE. It affects everything. The church should be the biggest opponent to the heliocentric THEORY, standing up to all the nassholes and industrial science liars. They are instead enablers, sending a very mixed message to believers and unbelievers alike.

The THEORY contradicts the Word and to date none of it has ever been proved. The flat earth has plenty of scriptural support. It also has been proved as fact many times in many ways and always with consistent results. There are over 200 examples that can be easily verified.

But the mind is the biggest of stumbling blocks.

  89. Nobody calls him on it now because they are able to distract everyone with the Trump squirrel.

Actually you’re wrong on that one. One of my fav MSNBC personalities, Steve Kornacki, commented just yesterday on the irony of our current Russian problems vis-a-vis Obamas debate pronouncements.

  90. Actually Rabbit SHOULD stop mouthing off about my viewing habits. Once With All Due Respect got cancelled 😩😩😩my political TV viewing at night fell to an average of 90 minutes. It takes about 10 minutes of Rachel Maddow to lull me to sleep at night and I watch about 45 mins of MoJo at lunch.

Actually I’ve rediscovered an old favorite this week: Law & Order (the original, not SVU, etc). I’ve seen virtually every episode over its 20 years but they hold up to repeated viewings.

  91. I guess I need a history lesson. I coulda sworn that in the past, at least one of you told me Palestinians are a construct, not a real thing and that Palestine is really not a thing.

Then what about Israel? As a “state”, was that not created out of whole cloth in the aftermath of WWII? Is it not an artificially created country? I see a double standard.

  92. I guess I need a history lesson
It is a heavy course with parts different folks embrace in a singular manner but almost never the whole. There in lies the cornerstone of the fundamental & foundational issues on the topic.

  93. So, any wagers on which personality has commented to most at the bar in 2016? Rutherford never gave us last year’s winners.

Last chance to up yours, guys and gals. 🙂

  94. Now Obama is bloating up the federal government with new fires into positions that are difficult to get rid of. That he could have done this years ago is proof it’s really just about making things difficult for Trump.

It is literally impossible for him to not be a fucking asshole.

  95. Rutherford never gave us last year’s winners.

Yeah, my bad Poolman. I have the stats sitting somewhere but never got around to posting. I’ll try to post two years worth once the 2016 numbers come in. I suspect Tex may have been dethroned this year because he’s been too busy living to hang out here as much.

  96. Whether it makes him an asshole or not, Obama will no doubt take steps to protect Donald and the country from Donald.

That is what happens when you elect a fucking reality TV star Leader of the Free World.

  97. Huck I need to see what the hires are. I don’t deny the man can be petty but in the next 20 days you will see Obama take steps to “protect his legacy” and fence Donald off from shooting himself in the foot.

I don’t rubber stamp all these potential moves. I think making it harder for Donald to launch the nukes is intuitively appealing but ultimately VERY dangerous for our country, creating a huge vulnerability. I’d have to judge other moves as they arise. I’ll go google this hiring binge you’re upset about.

  98. It’s not Nanny Obama’s job to protect the country from the next legally-elected administration.

It took 2 years of complete Democrat rule for the country to reject his party and their ideology. This time they rejected his legacy and his “if you don’t elect Hillary I will take it as a personal insult”.

Remember these words? “I won. Elections have consequences. Get the fuck over it.” They were shoved into the face of half the country by you, Democrats, and Barack Obama, himself.

    Time to eat ’em.

  99. A spokesman for the Office of Personnel Management, which sets hiring policy for the government, said agencies make their own decisions on when to hire and how many jobs to fill, provided that they have enough money in their budget. Since the election, OPM spokesman Samuel Schumach said, no agency has been given new authority to make hires.

    https://www.google.com/amp/www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/politics/ct-federal-agencies-job-openings-trump-20161230-story,amp.html

I found this Huck while you were doing my research for me.

I see only ONE problem. If indeed the Trump transition team was promised no new hires after Dec 1 then this is a prick move.

Otherwise, Huck you’re getting your undies in a knot for nothing. Within a business every department spends their allocated annual budget before it runs out – particularly in a use it or lose it scenario. That’s par for the course.

Plus they’re filling openings, not creating new openings/jobs.

So it all comes down to one thing: did Obama admin renege on a promise not to hire after 12/1? The answer to that is unclear.

  100. They were promised and this is a prick move. In 8 years it’s the only kind of move Barack Obama has ever proven he can make. He is incapable of any other kind.

  101. It’s not Nanny Obama’s job to protect the country from the next legally-elected administration.

No, it’s a patriot’s job. I think such “protection” must be done minimally and carefully. I don’t even argue with the notion of “let the chips fall where they may”. Hell, if I were Obama I’d say fuck it. A country stupid enough to elect a celebrity potus deserves what they get.

But what you call nanny, many liberals are calling patriot.

P.S. Let me repeat what I’ve said several times. Trump is a coin flip. His face may end up on Mount Rushmore or he could be the LAST president of the United States.

  102. And I’m not “getting my undies in a knot” over the action, itself, but rather Obama acting like a little cunt. After 8 years I’m fucking sick of it. This cocksucker can’t be gone fast enough for me. If I could afford it I’d be in DC next month to sing his bitch-ass off.

He lost. His party lost. Your party lost. Stop defending this bullshit and accept it

    You lost.

  103. “No, it’s a patriot’s job.”

When was the last time you or any other Democrat called Congressional Republicans “patriots”?

You know…if this were congressional democrats doing what they were sent to Washington to do, I wouldn’t be saying a word. I’d in fact be defending them.

    But it’s not.

  104. And if you doubt that, just remember I’m the one here who defended Harry Reid for doing what he was elected by the people of Nevada, and by the people of his party in congress, to do.

  105. Since I haven’t seen the 2016 numbers yet, my prediction is a toss up between James and Poolman for most 2016 comments.

I predict I am not in the running.
I wager El Tigre top slut slot 😛 2 years inarow.
    😆

  106. No, it’s a patriot’s job. I think such “protection” must be done minimally and carefully. I don’t even argue with the notion of “let the chips fall where they may”. Hell, if I were Obama I’d say fuck it. A country stupid enough to elect a celebrity potus deserves what they get.

    Bullshit, bullshit, and bullshit.

His last petty slaps at a nation which rejected his party and its agenda.

And after the country was “stupid enough” to elect the petulent man-child TWICE, any remarks about stupid choices after that should be tempered by the wilting sunlight of a “historic” and “unprecedented” chief executive who deliberately “ruled” with an eye toward constantly “othering” half the country while carrying on the most lawless administration since Tricky Dick Nixon.

But what you call nanny, many liberals are calling patriot.

But of course. The same way they call people trying to prevent them from rooting around in their pockets for money to buy votes “greed”, and the same way they call dependence on government a good thing.

P.S. Let me repeat what I’ve said several times. Trump is a coin flip. His face may end up on Mount Rushmore or he could be the LAST president of the United States.

Lighten up, Francis. We just survived 8 years of the most inept, worthless, America-hating POS to ever occupy the office. We can survive 4 years of an amateur who actually loves the country.

  107. Obama’s petulant narcissism is going exactly no where. Be prepared for the liar to be hurting and dividing America for years to come.

  108. Re: R’s hero Zero – “But Daddy, I love him! And he loves me.

That was too clever for me, the dumb-dumb. Could you explain? I at least like to understand how I’m being insulted.

  109. We can survive 4 years of an amateur who actually loves the country.

Amateur what? The guy is a better con than most politicians I have seen. As for ‘love of country’, pffftttt! 5 draft deferments. He is the most pro Israel president we have EVER had. Israel is his first love and the real why he got selected over clinton.

  110. Does the winner get a prize or a trophy?

People show their true colors under stress. Obama and his supporters have always been vindictive twits. They have merely removed their masks .

Obama and his corrupt press are worse than any thing Trump has hinted at so far. Local farmers who terraced last or this year are mad because new EPA rules will make the government fine them for despoiling a wet land if standing water from heavy rain remains after the work is completed. Trump supposedly wants to change the rules. That alone is worth the change to a new administration.

Five draft deferments don’t mean anything today, and they haven’t since Bill Clinton lied to escape the draft.

A survey shows that farmers now have the highest suicide rate in the country. They beat veterans and dentists. Lets see if the rate falls after Obama leaves office.

  111. Ok the long awaited stats for 2015 (last year)

    1 El Tigre 2841 comments
    2 James 1432 comments
    3 dead rabbit 1424 comments
    4 Tex Taylor 1390 comments
    5 Alfie 1051 comments

El Tigre took the crown in a blowout, almost twice as many comments as our second place finisher.

  112. They beat veterans and dentists. Lets see if the rate falls after Obama leaves office.

I know this wasn’t meant to be funny but the notion of dentists having a high suicide rate is hilarious to me. Does constant exposure to rotting gums make you THAT depressed?

I know one dentist who ain’t offing himself – Rabbit’s gay dentist. Getting inside the Rabbit’s mouth just makes his day. 🙂

  113. WordPress makes it fairly easy to get to them, Rabbit. They send a “report” every year. I’ve been sitting on the 2015 one and never got around to filling you guys in. I’m guessing they’ll send the 2016 one any day now.

  114. Is everyone partying tonight? It won’t surprise any of you that I’m staying put … and much to my relief my wife and kid just got back home. I have SERIOUS drunk-driver phobia on New Years Eve, exacerbated by my experience as a AAA phone agent.

  115. I tend to stay home on New Year’s Eve. Sometimes I’ll have some drinks with the wife and/or kid(s), but 1 kid has since moved out and the other is working tonight.

  116. In fact, people are always butt hurt that my wife and I enjoy family time on New Year’s Eve and don’t go out.

We let the kids stay up, wife cooks dinner, I drink about 5 beers.

  117. I know this wasn’t meant to be funny but the notion of dentists having a high suicide rate is hilarious to me. Does constant exposure to rotting gums make you THAT depressed?

More a matter of people generally not wanting to go see their dentist, or so I’ve read from serious inquiries.

I actually like mine. He did a fantastic job on my crown, and reminds me of Jesse from Diagnosis Murder.

  118. Is everyone partying tonight? It won’t surprise any of you that I’m staying put … and much to my relief my wife and kid just got back home. I have SERIOUS drunk-driver phobia on New Years Eve, exacerbated by my experience as a AAA phone agent.

I have the boys this weekend, so we’re hanging out here at home.

I’m not sure if the oldest will want to watch episodes of Airwolf or Babylon 5: Thirdspace.

Yes, I know it is an exciting life I lead these days.

  119. My dental hygienist is gay. Not my dentist. My dentist is a Jewish dude in his late 50s remarried to a hot chick in her 20s. He let’s me rock the gas the minute I sit in the chair and gives me vicodin when I’m in any discomfort. Love that guy.

  120. Mine gives me a bad time when I go in.

He’s a bigger Eric Church fan than I am, and he’s always had great tickets for every show Chief has played in Washington for the last 6 years.

But then, his clients have insurance to pay their bills, so he has a lot more disposable income than I do.

  121. Mrs poolman is taking the 2 eldest grand kids back to their house. They spent the night here last night and all of today. We just got back from church and dinner at our favorite Mexican food restaurant. I will feel better when she gets back safely, though it is still early here. There are people out all over my neighborhood and plenty with fireworks. I think I will go for my second beer.

  122. Five draft deferments don’t mean anything today, and they haven’t since Bill Clinton lied to escape the draft.

You went back to clinton? It should mean plenty, since these people send other people’s kids to die for them in foreign lands. Cheney had 5 deferments also. It is like anything else in America. The wealthy do not need to follow the same rules as the rest of the people. They are above the law or a law unto themselves. For anyone to say they love America is naive. They rather love what they can get out of America.

  123. I use to love going to the dentist. Probably because I have perfect teeth. I liked the the feel of them after a good cleaning and polishing. But I haven’t been in probably 15 years since my regular dentist passed away. His replacement had an entirely different philosophy and pricing structure. I decided to skip the dentist to avoid more x-ray radiation in my mouth. I never got gassed.

  124. Apropos of all this dentist talk … I need to research this but I swear when I brush my teeth with an electric toothbrush, my heart rate slows down and my breathing becomes more normal.

    I don’t think I’m imagining it. It’s pretty consistent.

  125. That is probably true, Rutherford. the vibration at a high frequency is good for you. We have a platform from soloflex that provides full body vibration. Eases tension and the cat likes it too. Like a big purring bench. 🙂

  126. Sounds like a war zone outside. What is the deal with fireworks anyway? Aside from scaring the crap out of the animals. What is it we get from this? Just curious if anyone has a good answer. I guess I never appreciated the hoopla.

  127. I did have some fun with bottle rockets when I was younger. We got drunk and shot them at each other. I wouldn’t recommend it. It was funny as shit at the time.

  128. I know I’ve seen it before, but I can’t remember a thing about it, so I added it to my watch list.

Last night I finally watched The Finest Hours after adding it to my list upon Tex’s recommendation. It was a good watch.

  129. Happy New Year to our Blog Host self-identifying rube and the rest of you stooges and stoogess. I slept the New Year in I’m so old anymore. It’s 2017 and the End of an Error – something to celebrate!

  130. Those men who fled from the draft are on one level self centered cowards. For that I consider myself better than they. However, I was sometimes a coward too when I told people I was not a veteran.

My being superior to them on one level has no effect on their abilities or intent which are probably superior to mine. If they can do the job I will support them. I hope they love this country, and I think a cowardly weakling can love his country, not that it is what they are.

  131. I hate dentists but I see them regularly to avoid major work.

An Air Force dentist decided to save time and remove all four of my wisdom teeth in one operation. All but one were unerupted, and two were on their sides. The dentist split one into four pieces to remove it, and he lost a half inch root tip in my lingual space, a serious place.

He became crazed and took two full mouth ex-ray pictures plus many others of the local area. I knew it wasn’t going well as a crowd gathered around my chair. After two hours, the feeling returned, but the big fool pressed on. The pain level was pretty high, and I told the dentist I needed more anesthetic. The dentist refused and continued to dig and poke. After four hours, someone told the colonel who gave the captain a direct order to give me another shot. Almost five hours after we started, I was on my way to the ward. I was there for two days.

My jaw wouldn’t work right, and I had to rely on soft food like jello and ice cream. The side of my face ached and throbbed for several weeks. A new commander took over, and he told me that the root tip was in a dangerous place where an infection or cancer might kill me. The operation was dangerous since my root tip was resting on an artery. He thought the safest procedure was coming from below my cheek instead of through my mouth. We all lost interest.

Two years later, I was on another base. The commander saw luminessence around my root tip and said we needed to go in immediately. I left the hospital the night before the operation, and noticed the commander was reading an instruction book.

The next day, the surgeon stuck a needle farther down my throat than the assistent had ever seen and he marveled that I didn’t chock. Some seeped out of the needle hole and partly paralyzed my throat. I could hardly swallow. He almost got the root tip, but I chocked and my coughing moved the root tip. The failed operation ended two and a half hours after it began.

The left side of my face remained numb for four months. I had to be careful, because my chewing on my tongue or cheek made blood flow from my mouth. Later, as feeling returned, I suffered pain when I chewed on my tongue which had partial feeling.

My jaw still aches and throbes sometimes, and I can feel the bulge of the root tip when I put my index finger as far down my throat as I can. The dentist checks it once a year. When I was in grad school, a dentist assured me that the root tip would kill me within ten years. It hasn’t yet, though it felt awful for a month after the train hit us. The tooth was almost as bad as the contusions. My jaw still locks and snaps so loudly one can hear it across the room on good days.

Now you know why I don’t like visiting the dentist.

  132. We used to attend the Queen’s birthday in late June because the weather was usually good then. On warm days, the crowd’s odor became pungent. The royals piled into their limos and drove through the crowd. One year, the Queen looked at my wife and me standing next to the car window. She waved at us and a hundred other people.

We met someone who’s car broke down in the North of Scotland. Someone in an expensive looking car stopped to give aid. It was the Queen and her driver.

  133. Navy savaged all my wisdom teeth. I was in so much pain. On meds, post op, they made me drive a Navy van 5 hours from San Francisco to Humboldt County. My head throbbing. When I arrived, still in a painful opiate stupor and glad I didn’t drive off a the side of a mountain, I realised I had none of my medical records.

They blamed it all on me. Had to get like 12 shots all over again.

  134. I’m watching Face the Nation and to my shock the most gloomy panelists are … the conservatives! It was so striking that left leaning panelist Jeffrey Goldberg even remarked on it. To hear David Frum and Michael Gerson talk, we might as well slit our wrists now. 😳😳😳😳

  135. I have had my share of military medicine. Plenty of shots. Fortunately not oral surgery. The most memorable was a dislocated elbow at 14 (or 15) that ended up keeping me in the hospital 3 days after the ‘docs’ reset it and then couldn’t find my pulse. I remember that event like a recurring nightmare. Their talk of possibly ‘losing’ my arm scared the crap out of me. 3 big men wrestling my arm and popping it back in joint. It popped in within seconds and I told them so. Unconvinced, they kept at it.

Decades later it is almost completely normal. There were numb areas that are finally no longer numb after 40 plus years of recovery. Fortunately I work construction and over time range of motion and strength returned. Today no one can tell unless I point it out.

  136. The only military medical discomfort I can attest to pales in comparison to James and Rabbit and is second hand. My dad got an inoculation that really messed up his arm and he was forced to wash windows with that same arm.

I gather a necessary component of military service is sadism.

  137. Once you join, the military considers you and your dependents property and often the freely provided medical treatments are harsh and/or experimental. Shots and vaccinations are set to overkill.

  138. The other stories sound horrible. The dentists who did a number on me weren’t sadists. They were in over their heads and they panicked.

An Airman was working his last duty day before civilian life. It was late at night and he had too many medical records to file. He put them in his pickup and left the records at the dump. No one found out until after he was gone. We were busy giving shots which were not needed but had no proof they had been given.

If anyone messed with the medics we provided pay back. A dentist numbed the patient and let someone who had never before cleaned teeth work on the unfortunate. That was sadistic.

As Huck wrote, David Frum is not a conservative. What is his worry?

That Trump might chicken out, or that he will actually do what he has promised?

  139. David Frum is not a conservative

Funny, that’s exactly how a Facebook friend of mine reacted to the comment when I posted it there. He said essentially, “my conservative friends tell me Gerson and Frum are not “real” conservatives.

  140. Again accusing Russia of hacking our elections. Fake-assed news! Repeat the lie over and over and over and over and over until it gets wedged into the subconscious. That seems to be common with these telegoons. The more you listen the dumber you get.

  141. I cannot fucking believe it. I’ve been dragged into an even more left wing fuck tard outing.
Everyone is fucking whining about how non blue America has destroyed America.
One started with New Year greeting that I politely fielded. She then took it to a political plane so even though I didn’t vote Trump Insaid My side won. Slag slithered off outraged. Currently sitting with my kids by myself far side of house. 😂

  142. “He said essentially, “my conservative friends tell me Gerson and Frum are not “real” conservatives.”

    I’m not a conservative 🙂

  143. Face the Nation is the Sunday morning pity party we would have if Hillary had won.

I would feel a little sorry for them but they are the people who took us to where we are and looked down their noses at rural and flyover populations.

They are just beginning to realize what they have lost. It includes the public respect for their occupations.

I am gloating over that video as I am for Alfie’s “My side won.”

  144. Face the reality, whiners. The STORY is the press failed us and has been failing us for decades. That’s the STORY you should ALL be on. The sad part is every one of those crybabies gets a paycheck.

  145. The media is scared shitless. Good. They need to be.

Dopes like Frum, and I told Rutherford Frum was a wolf in sheep’s clothing all the way back in 2008, thought Barack Rutherford was the 2nd coming. They have zero credibility and now act as if all is right in the world. If all is right in the world, why are there more refugees walking the earth than in the last 70 years? If Barack such a major stabilizing force, why is the world in such chaos and Europe becoming unstable? Why has our debt doubled? If the unemployment rate 4.6%, why do so many feel left behind. If Barack Obama a successful President, why have Democrats lost so much the last eight years?

American people know they are being lied to. It’s insulting.

Trump won not because Russia hacked the political system – utter horse chit meant to marginalize Trump’s stunning win. It’s because Americans have finally woke up to the fact D.C. is completely out of touch with most of the country, including many Republican hacks, and utterly self-serving while profoundly arrogant. Barack was the media’s candidate. His failure is their failure. Barack Obama was the ideal candidate – if you reside in NYC, or Boston, or Chicago, or San Francisco, or Hollywood.

The rest of the country knew better.

If Trump proves successful, these media hacks understand their days are numbered.

  146. “If Barack such a major stabilizing force, why is the world in such chaos and Europe becoming unstable?”

I was just thinking a similar sentiment as I listened to the clip.

Trump didn’t create fear, he capitalized on it. So if he didn’t create it, that means it was already there.

So if Barack Obama was such a great leader, why was there so much fear?

  147. My first post of the new year will be a “final assessment” of Barack Obama. I will try to be fair about his shortcomings but I will also call out some of the ridiculousness, some of it evident in this very thread.

  148. I sometimes care about the stuff you write.

But I got to be honest, I don’t give a flying fuck about your Obama swan song. If it’s super long, I ain’t reading it brah.

  149. “My first post of the new year will be a “final assessment” of Barack Obama.”

    Oh Jesus.

Name it: “In Final Defense of My Stupidity”

You’ve had 8 fucking years. Methinks your final assessment couldn’t be worth any more than the 8-years worth of interim assessments that all proved to be fan-worshipping bullshit that was dead wrong.

  150. Huck, you watch Westworld?

While I still think you should stick with Black Mirror (Twilight Zone had some stinkers too and it’s the modern Twilight Zone) Westworld is very entertaining.

  151. Haven’t seen Westworld, but heard good things.

I have several shows beginning or coming back this month. Homeland, Black Sails, Outsiders, Taboo (Tom Hardy miniseries).

And in the middle of Vikings. If you’ve never seen that one, you should. Best show that has ever been on History Channel.

  152. Huck, I think you suggested I watch Vikings a long time ago. I watched several episodes on Hulu.

Yes, it is a good show and seems to provide a modicum of historical accuracy.

As you know our family has h traced its roots for over a century. My mother’s side of the family has one of the oldest names in Europe, and it began in Denmark. Some of my mother’s family were Viking enforcers to punish oath breakers and others.

  153. Obama has been a uniting force. He changed so much about our society that opponents united to vote for an unlikely candidate to fire the liberals and save their country.

Brexit and populist activity in Europe while not directly attributable to Obama is a reaction to the same ideology.

Many South Americans are also becoming disenchanted with leftism.

Liberal politicians, including Obama have helped contribute to an international movement. So, in his way, Obama has been a unifier. Once he understands he will suffer the torture of the damned.

  154. If it’s super long, I ain’t reading it brah.

When’s the last time I wrote something super long? Skim the mofo or just read the parts that diss him. 🙂

  155. Mrs poolman and I watched 5 episodes of ‘People of Earth’ on TBS the other night. It had us laughing pretty good.

  156. “Tigre – you disappoint me maaaaan. All I get is snark about my upcoming blog post instead of congrats on FINALLY watching My Cousin Vinny?”

Pfffft. 30 minutes missing from the experience? The greatest movie ever made?

  157. Merry Christmas and happy new year, R. Eighteen days to go, and then – I hope – it’s showtime!

My greatest interest will be whether or not a majority of black folks look back, wise up, and decide that the Democrat plantation is not for them. It would be a real sea-change and I believe the first step toward their becoming an integral part of This Great Nation.

  158. I hope we hear a little less about black folks for the next 4 years.

The reason Obama is such a terrible leader is that he doesn’t like people.

He was a miserable president demanding company from an America he disdains. He doesn’t believe in an America that sets things right. He doesn’t know that America.

He has a lousy work ethic. He doesn’t seem well read or appear to have any interests or talents. He doesn’t care about truth or justice, he cares about power and revenge. He represents a small but lethal segment of the far left that has devoured the Democrat party, or rather what was left of it after the Clintons chowed down in the 90s.

The Obama Era will be remembered for its absence of soul and conscience. It represents a time and a people steeped in lawlessness, anger, envy, selfishness, greed, hypocrisy, grievance, and lies.

Rutherford says that a nation that elects a reality tv star deserves President Trump. But the truth is the country had a chance to elect a decent man who they knew would have done a decent job of it and they trashed him in favor of the poser they knew was sucking at the job. It’s they who deserve President Trump.

I hope Trump is able to keep beating them because clearly they haven’t haven’t gotten the message.

You cant just install a president, even an historical one. Whatever that means. If you need to have a certain skin color or particular plumbing to be an historical president then you’re doing it wrong.

  159. ” He doesn’t seem well read or appear to have any interests or talents.”

    Not true.

He enjoys his college hoops bracketing.

  160. “The holy man is he who takes your soul and will make them his. When you choose your holy man, you surrender your will. You give it him in utter submission, in full renunciation.” Feodor Dostoyevsky “The Brothers Karamazov”

The left gave their souls to Obama and by
extension Hillary. Now, they feel lost.

Rasputin, who also attracted a slavish following, was murdered a hundred years ago this last weekend. Rasputin had an almost supernatural resistance to attempts on his life.

Like Rasputin Obama and the Clintons survived threats to their political lives which would have destroyed others. However, like Rasputin, they attracted a revolutionary movement which eventually reached critical mass and appeared to destroy them. Alexander Kerensky said that there would have been no Lenin without Rasputin. There would also have been no Trump without Obama.

We appear to have politically murdered Hillary and Obama, but like Rasputin, during the long murder attempt, our enemies may still have enough life to fight again.

  161. Muffy I enjoyed your comment very much even though there are parts I disagree with. I do believe you capture the spirit of a number of folks newly awakened and stirring. I think those folks are going to be shocked when all the sand clears.

  162. Oh check it out, the walking poster boy for keeping marijuana illegal, a dunce so stupid he thinks the Earth is flat, posted a link.

  163. Of course the dead rabbit is a globehead. I was until a couple months ago when I actually began to test that THEORY and found it doesn’t hold water – literally and figuratively speaking. But the educator would rather trust his human overlords and their gatekeepers. He probably now believes it is pear shaped because an actor told him so. 🙂 There are over 60 scriptural references. Here’s a few:

  164. Proof? You either believe God or government. I choose to believe Him. He’s been faithful to lead me in paths of righteousness. Maybe someday He will reveal Himself to you. That is my prayer.

  165. While I don’t click on his stupid links I will give Poolman some credit. The fool is a legitimate test of my faith.

Today I was taking measures to get my family more involved in the parish, including getting my heathen 4 year old babtized.

But then I see poolman. This walking example for me on how fruitless faith in God can be. An utter fool…Yet here I am trying testing my faith to ultimately believe the same thing this fucking moron does. Is it possible Poolman is worse for wear because of his Christianity?

Probably more of a testimonial of the character of the rabbit, more than anything. A village idiot tests my faith like Satan.

  166. If it makes your journey an easier, DR, I don’t know what that poster was meant to convey either. As example, how one gets, “the earth does not move” from this:

The Lord reigns, he is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength; indeed, the world is established, firm and secure. ~ Psalms 93:1 NIV

Is a mystery to me. 😆 😆 Apparently, I’m not picking up the right vibes of scripture – my dope must be impure. 😈 Perhaps I should move to peyote.

  167. Pfffft. 30 minutes missing from the experience? The greatest movie ever made?

ROTFLMAO!!! I could promise you a million on Monday; give you two on Tuesday and you’d complain it’s a day late.

My wife gave me the synopsis of the first 30 and it was what I’d already figured out.

BTW you once posted the scene of Vinny “negotiating” with the pool hustler. The better scene is when he actually slugs him. That cracked me up.

  168. Of course the dead rabbit is a globehead. I was until a couple months ago when I actually began to test that THEORY and found it doesn’t hold water – literally and figuratively speaking.

All of those flights and ocean journeys circumnavigating the globe that never came back because they went off the edge are a testament to Poolman’s truth.

And don’t even get me started on how ICBMs don’t actually work.

    rolls eyes

  169. And the best funny movie ever made about the practice of law is “From the Hip”.

Everyone knows this, and when I found a copy on CD last fall for 5 bucks?

    Made. My. Week.

4 days arguing the admissibility of the word “ass”. And thenthe next week getting a murder case where you figure out that your client is a psychopath who actually DID it?

Yeah, I call it a pretty good representation of the absurdity of my job sometimes.

  170. BiC, you’re gonna hate me for this. I thought “From The Hip” sucked and still do.

Even with 30 minutes chopped out of it, My Cousin Vinny is the greatest. Sometimes when I’ve got a case in rural GA, I feel like I’m on the set.

  171. As example, how one gets, “the earth does not move” from this:

The world is established, so that it cannot be moved. That is what my amplified says. Psalm 96:10 and 1st Chronicles 16:30 says it again. Yours says virtually the same, but apparently you don’t understand the difference between ‘established’ or ‘firm and secure’ and spinning on an axis and flying through space.

Really though, I’m not surprised you can hold 2 diametrically opposed notions in your noggin. Cognitive dissonance does that. And if there is anything you are full of…

I will wager you cannot prove the spinning ball earth. I know it. I recently tried.

  172. All of those flights and ocean journeys circumnavigating the globe that never came back because they went off the edge are a testament to Poolman’s truth.

I posted a link to real time flights some time ago. Anyone that had an interest to try to prove I was wrong could go there and see for themselves that no planes are flying over ocean areas located in what we call the southern hemisphere. I realize it is easier and popular to just make fun of it. However, this truth will change everything in your world if you are brave enough to approach it. I found a short (4 min) video that should pique your interest, assuming you really want truth.

    Flights prove a flat earth.

  173. I will wager you cannot prove the spinning ball earth. I know it. I recently tried.

Well, I know established physics and mathematics generally isn’t your thing, Poolman. But I would hope even you could establish as the sun moves across the sky, you could at least comprehend in that drug addled mind, one of the two must be true:

Either the earth is rotating. Or the sun is rotating. Can we at least first agree to that? And after you’ve contemplated that truly deep thought, try to determine why there is a change of seasons relative to the 23.4 degree incline of the earth. And please do so in mathematical terms which you can thoroughly explain to the rest of us rubes and cognitive dissonant types.

I am confident enough in Brother Rabbit that he will understand this verse.

When I left for Macedonia, I urged you to stay there in Ephesus and stop those whose teaching is contrary to the truth. Don’t let them waste their time in endless discussion of myths and spiritual pedigrees. These things only lead to meaningless speculations, which don’t help people live a life of faith in God. ~ 1 Timothy 1:3-4

The one thing I don’t understand about you, is do you purposely try to be ignorant to amuse those around you in discussion or are you really that fatuous and don’t know it?

  174. I’ll give Muffy credit for going beyond her usual one-liner.

I hope we hear a little less about black folks for the next 4 years.

So said 18th and 19th century racists too. I’m really not calling you a racist and I even think I know where you’re headed but your phraseology is meant to provoke, not lead to any meaningful analysis or discussion. I’d really love to see you take another go at that one without the deliberate callousness.

As for much of the rest of your piece, you, like many others here, talk as though you know the man … full of character assassination upon which you have zero evidence – just your dislike. Frankly, it’s immature and a waste of time.

But the truth is the country had a chance to elect a decent man who they knew would have done a decent job of it and they trashed him in favor of the poser they knew was sucking at the job.

No, those who chose Obama over Romney did not think Obama was a poser nor did they think Obama sucked at the job.

Character assassination is soooooo much easier than real policy discussion. Aflie’s just published a post on his blog that I’m looking forward to reading. I suspect there will be some meat there.

  175. LOL. Well, I have a question to ask then Poolman. If the moon and the sun are in phase as you suggest, why do we have different phases of the moon?

Better yet, if the earth is flat as you suggest, why do South Americans see a different set of stars than we in North America?

Some people here call you a disgrace. Some like I used to just call you ignorant.

Me, I think mentally ill and in desperate need of treatment. Unfortunately, you don’t appear to have anyone around you either wise enough to recognize it or perhaps just as crazy…

  176. Actually he’s one in 7.4 billion. However, just like the rest, he cannot prove the non scriptural spinning and hurling ball THEORY. Neither can you. He is asking me to prove God’s Word. Ironic methinks. I am confident the Word is true. The immovable earth is provable and has been proved hundreds of times by hundreds of people.

Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, which some have professed and in so doing have departed from the faith. ~1 Timothy 6:20-21

  177. As for much of the rest of your piece, you, like many others here, talk as though you know the man

I judge him not anywhere near as much by what he says as by what he DOES.

Closing open air monuments which are open 24/7 because Congress doesn’t want to give him a blank check? Petty and small.

Wagging his finger in my face while contributing to racial division? Myopic and divisive.

Saying the he doesn’t know what happened, but the police acted stupidly? Janusary and Condescending.

Lecturing on “civility” while calling members of Congress who oppose him, in accord with the thinking of those who elected them, “terrorists”, and claiming that they are “holding the country hostage”? Grossly hypocritical and a betrayal of the potential he could have fulfilled as the Nation’s Second Black President.

Making major events about HIM, rather than honoring those who should be honored at those events? Epically Narcissistic and Wildly Inappropriate.

Looking for “someone’s butt to kick” rather than engaging any meaningful assistance ( al the Deepwater Horizon spill)? Childish and silly.

Declaring foreign policy “redlines”, and doing NOTHING to back his tough talk? Feckless and irresponsible.

Making us all involuntary stakeholders in an auto company by way of a “bankruptcy” than wasn’t while stiffing secured creditors in favor of his favored unsecured creditors? Refusing to enforce immigration law and preventing enforcement of the same law by a co-sovereign? Unilaterally re-writing his “signature” legislation multiple times in order to avoid the natural and unavoidable consequences of that law on his watch? Transferring BILLIONS of dollars to Iran in blatant violation of the law? Arbitrary, capricious, and lawless.

By every metric that can be measured beyond the “feels” of those airheaded enough to excuse every failure based on the belief of the perpetrator’s “good intentions”, Obama has been a crushing failure, R. And he still believes in his demi-divine “gift” to this country.

To call it the Audacity of a Dope (and his retinue of loopy retainers) would be too damn generous.

You laud the election of a black man. I cannot accept the notion that his skin color can in anyway excuse the complete unfitness for the job he demonstrated at every single turn. He is the living, breathing example of why identity politics is toxic, and why all iterations of “affirmative action” (now “diversity”) need to be ended and merit reinstated as a civic aspiration.

  178. No, those who chose Obama over Romney did not think Obama was a poser nor did they think Obama sucked at the job.

I doubt very much that many of them were thinking beyond the next deposit on their EBT cards or their next Section 8 voucher, and who was more likely to disturb that gravy train.

  179. Ford bringing 700 jobs to Michigan instead of Mexico and directly cites Trump as the reason why.

There is no denying…This is a big fucking deal, to quote Biden.

I’m sure there is a ton to debate here on both philosophy and policy….But Damn…..Michigan might be red again in 2020 if the GOP sticks with this neo-nationalism shtick.

Will be at the very least ironic seeing the UAW endorse the GOP.

  180. I have been gone for a while, so this is the first time I have read any of the comments. I agree with the latest article.

None of us knows the Obamas so we cannot honestly judge their minds or motives. We can judge their actions.

Obama and his wife are either racists or they are using race as a political weapon to destroy their enemies. They, by their actions and words have given tacit permission to other blacks to express the latent racism which whites through their economic and cultural power still impose in a kinder, gentler way than in previous generations.

The latest manifestation of Obama-related racism is a collection of essays extolling the wonder of Michele. Most of the writers are successful black women who failed to adequately curb their emotions.

One wrote that like Jacqueline Kennedy, Michele shows her arms. The difference is Jackie’s arms were milky white and communicated something other than strength.

Michele’s arms in contrast, are brown and strong. Her wonderful arms threaten white people who use her body to denigrate her in a racist way.

I don’t know if the Obamas are actually racists, but the demonstrable legacy they have imposed on this country is open and hostile racism.

  181. Again, we can only judge Obama and the others by their actions. Obama may or may not have been a failure. He seems to be a smart man, and we could be misjudging when we apply “merit” to him.

I raise the possibility that Obama wanted to destroy our country as we know it and to weaken our place in the world.

He and his followers are socialists. Donald is a capitalist who has a talent for benefiting himself. So far, he has been able to outsmart his enemies and he likes to delegate details to others. Time will tell.

What's on your mind?
