    The federal budget is shrinking as a percentage of gross domestic product, falling just below 20 percent in the third quarter of 2014. That’s down four points from its peak of 24 percent in 2011, according to market analysis firm Strategas’ survey of recent Treasury Department data.

    “That’s a pretty large drop in government spending,” said Daniel Clifton, head of policy research for Strategas.

    The drop puts current federal spending close to the norm for the last half-century. While the budget has grown in absolute numbers — the omnibus spending bill passed earlier this month totaled more than $1 trillion — federal spending has averaged just over 19 percent of GDP since 1963.

    The decline is due to a combination of factors, the main one being the restraints that were put on federal spending in 2011 as a result of the debt ceiling standoff in Congress.

    Gassed. Pepper sprayed. Deprived of sleep. Water boarded. Mentally fucked with. All common military experiences.

    Never heard anyone complain about it until the guy who orchestrated the 911 attacks endured the same treatment.

    I do think it’s a reasonable debate to have. However, when the left shrieks for Darth Cheney to be arrested while Obama murders people, even Americans, instead of putting them in Gitmo (he does like those secret sites), I smirk and tune out.

  13. Enhanced interrogation sounds more clinical and humane than torture. Of course we know those words were chosen specifically for that reason. Judges and generals were replaced with ones agreeable to the distortion. It is one of many slippery slopes contributing to our collective downfall. The record of survival for empires entering such a downward spiral is not very good.

    Then we have the lies told us so often we think them truths. One cited often is that enhanced interrogation gave us the confession from 9/11’s mastermind and have prevented other planned terrorist attacks. I prefer to interpret the Freudian slips.

    But let’s look to those tasked to defend us and our rights. How many people do you think have taken an oath to defend our Constitution against ALL enemies both foreign and domestic? How many of these defenders are still active today and receive compensation for doing just that? You would think our rights would be well secure, yet the opposite has been the result.

    Distractions and diversions. We have short attention spans and shorter memories.Today even Darth Cheney admits we shot down flight 93.

  16. $1.89 gas here, the lowest so far. What is gas costing in oil country, Tex? We have to get ours via pipeline and supposedly we have a special winter blend which attributes to a little higher prices than other places. The freeways sure are packed more than usual.

  17. It’s actually raining here today. The temperature has dropped a degree to now 40. Too cold and wet to get out. We are wimpy in Phoenix when it gets like this. Break out the flannels and jackets! Away with short pants 😀 I couldn’t stand -9. Actually there are people out in shorts. Turistas! Some locals, mostly white boys, sport the shorts with jacket look. 😆 I think it’s like sandals with socks silly.

  19. I lived in Lubbock 18 years, but that was not as a dependent and never lived near Waco. I have traveled all over the state of Texas. Mrs poolman was born at BAMC in San Antonio. I lived in El Paso twice while dad was at Ft Bliss. White Sands missile range in NM for a year and a half. Shilling AFB Salina, KS for a year while dad was in Vietnam. Fulda, Germany three years (though I was stateside the last 2), Oahu five years when dad was stationed at Schofield. Before that was Long Island during his navy days.

  22. I’m not much on travel, James. I like occasional road trips but really hate the whole airport bit. I will hope to fly private if I must do so in the future. Hawaii is nice as is Cozumel, but the California coast is within a half day’s drive. There are a lot of areas in Europe of interest and I have long wanted to visit SA. I will settle on virtual trips for now. I can visit anywhere from the comfort of home. 😀 I joined a fb group of military brats years ago as we all had much in common. One was our grade school experiences. I went to 9 different schools by the time I graduated.

I know he was at Monmouth in NJ after he reupped as army. I had/have relatives all over NYC and NJ, my birth state.

  34. I love travel, Poolman, especially road trips. I don’t mind flying in spite of the narrow escapes, but I don’t like processing in at air ports.
    We are both virtual travelers eh? How deeply do you delve into a country? Do you check their television or radio shows?

    Our old base has a web site which lets people get in touch with each other. One large group is former Air Force brats.

    It was -12 this morning, but with a south wind, our high was 16. Omaha reached at least 20. Weather casters are talking about how mild and pleasant it is today.

  37. Another small thing from the other thread. Someone mentioned the Nordic casual attitude toward religion. The Baltic nations are not overly religious either. Some blame the Christians who brought a religion adapted to a warm, desert climate and forced people to abandon gods suited to the chilly dark forests of northern Europe. Many people hedged their bets and secretly worshiped the old gods too.Some are still pagans, but for others, over time, they quit bothering.

  41. Ragi, I am a former Air Force medic. I served from 1966 to 1970. Several brats and we knew each other on one base, because they came in for exams, and we all were about the same age.Some even dated. Were you ever in Europe or the UK? Some of us kept in touch for a few years, and we visited one after she married and had a baby in New Mexico. It would be wonderful if we had met before.

    The band America began as Air Force brats in the UK. I think I was briefly on a base with at least one of them, but we never met.

    Our daughter likes “The Hunger Games.” My wife and I drove back to Omaha and watched our grand daughter so they could see the movie. Their work schedules are so out of sync that it is hard for them to do things like that.

    Thanks for the complement Muffy. You and Ragi are also assets to this blog, and you make it better than it would be without you.

Our commander’s friend had an eight or nine year girl who eventually grew up to front Katrina and the Waves. She later moved back to England and around 1998 her band won the Eurovision contest.

    I suppose “It depends upon what the meaning of the word ‘is’ is.” Key is intentional affliction. The definition of torture includes psychological pain and suffering. Our ‘drone patrol’ has certainly crossed that threshold in Yemen, a country with whom we have not officially declared war. The degree of torture is not at issue. People have varying tolerances to pain and stress.

    One day is no more significant than another in that they each hold their own promise. We humans make a distinction. Even so, as we are all focused on beginnings and restarts, I pray the path before us provides opportunity for all to experience life to its fullness. I pray scales will be removed from our eyes so that we can see clearly what is visible in plain sight. I pray our ears be clear and bent toward truth, no matter how muffled the sound. I ask for my friends here the same prayer Paul records in his letter to the Ephesians:

    “For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom his whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.   55. Ragi may have the answer to why JAL has it in for her and me. Ragi asked if Lurker reminded me of Delurkergurl of the other site. I have no idea if both are the same or not. But the word play may mean something.

    As we know, Newt was an incarnation of NOP on the other side and you remember she attacked me so viciously several people demanded an appology which I accepted against the advice of some. Its a stretch to find a pattern in so few examples, but if there is a connection, it would explain things. I don’t believe JAL as NOP ever got the best of Ragi or me there or here–or anyone here for that matter.

    Like Tex, I visited the grannies to do a victory dance after the election. It was unsatisfying because the site was dead. A few people I mostly didn’t know agreed the Democrats deserved to lose. I peered into Delurkers’ kitchen, but it was just as dead. Someone commented that with my and several others’ return maybe the site would revive.

    If this hypothesis is true, JAL has plenty of spleen to throw.

  56. I hope it is an awesome year too Poolman, but for us, the jury is still out. Our daughter is afraid to see a specialist or let our grand daughter have a genetic test. She is resigned to our grand daughter’s official designation as micro encephalitic. Nothing I found matches, so maybe she merely has a small head.

    Her father said last week, our grand daughter was pretending to sleep so he would leave her room.Her deception encouraged him that her mind is working,. She likes people especially waitresses in restaurants. Our grand daughter picks someone and stares until they recognize her. Then, she waves and smiles. People tell us she is cute and vivacious which she is.

    We were in Omaha on Monday to celebrate our son-in law’s birthday. She walked around the restaurant with her mother. Later, I said “You roamed a lot tonight” She responded “Yeah I did.” Three of us heard her say it. She can say eight or nine words and understands many more at 18 months, but her statement was probably a fluke.

    The condition I found that has any possibility of matching our grand daughter has normal development at 18 months followed by stability and then a steady decline with nasty symptoms. I think she is alright with each passing day, but I still worry. We won’t see her again until next week. We will be able to spot any changes good or bad.

    Well I DO appreciate that although I find it kinda harsh that you can’t find any redeeming value from my presence here.

    My remark that the top commenters had cumulatively written more than I have WAS a compliment. In fact the whole reason for posting the stats was to tip my hat to them. You don’t know a damn compliment when you see one.

    I have done my best to remove “clit” every time I have seen it. Let me know if I missed one and I will take care of it. Redacting is the best I can do short of banning the offender, which as I recall you said was not your preference.

    There was a time when I felt an abortion was a woman’s business alone. I felt she had complete dominion over her body and I felt there should be NO restrictions on abortion.

    I am an animal lover to the extreme. Don’t mess with me where animals are concerned. The picture of Trig and his dog warmed my soul. That dog knew exactly what was going on and from the looks of it the two had played that game before. I bet they shared whatever Trig was reaching for 🙂

    I am fed up with the so called animal/children activists. You can’t discipline your child in public and probably can’t discipline your dog.   116. It took me a while before I came to terms with the fact I’m not a dog person. Nobody wants to be that guy.

    We had three dogs and two cats in the Rabbit house. My wife went through this dog and cat adoption stage back when she was having fertility problems.

    The dogs were terribly trained and absolutely spoiled.

    All of sudden we started making babies and it was obvious the situation in this household was unsustainable, the last straw being one of the dogs ferociously growling a my first born.

    My wife sobbed and begged when I snapped that the growler dog was dead.

    After I purged the first dog, the others were easy. People began to hear I wasn’t fucking around and showed up to adopt the rest if the animals.

    The stress release in the house was euphoric. And my wife didn’t even stay mad and now admits life is so much better without them.

    I’m much more a cat lover. I like dogs okay, but am not a dog person. I haven’t had a dog since we moved to Arizona over 20 years ago. My girls were upset with me back then over the fact that I wouldn’t get another dog. I told them they could have whatever they wanted when they moved out and got their own space. I’ve never regretted it. No dog shit, no dog slobber, no dog smell, no chewed shoes or ruined carpet.

    Cats aren’t perfect, but they are much cleaner and easier to care for than dogs. Dogs require a lot more attention and time I’m not willing to give. Kittens are fun, but can be destructive. I’ve had plenty of cats, once as many as 9. Now we just have one middle-aged tabby that thinks she’s people. 🙂

It will phase, have a romance with a storm racing south from Canada. The attendants are soggy air to the south and a strong cold front from Yukon.

    Thompson, Man is -36. Rapid City is 9 with a quarter mile visibility in moderate snow and blowing snow with the wind gusting to 54 MPH. Parts of the Red River Valley in North Dakota have a blizzard warning, not for snow which is or has fallen but for snow blowing south from counties where it did fall.

    Our weather is pleasant at 31 degrees, but later we should have an inch or two of snow and wind gusting to 50 MPH with our temperature falling below zero. I need to ski before our inch of old snow melts or before the cold wave. We are planning to celebrate a late Christmas with friends. Maybe we should do it later this afternoon instead of this evening.

  125. Dogs. Definitely dogs. My sister had a tomcat when we were still at home. Very cool animal – beautiful, big cat. But not anywhere near as good as our worst dog. And we must have had a dozen dogs while I was growing up. Every stray ended up at my parent’s home. Back then, nobody neutered, though we did have the females fixed.

    We had all kinds of animals, aquariums and cheap exotics like Hermit crabs. I even had an alligator that my mother was deathly afraid of. Can you believe schmoes like me used to be able to buy alligators in the 60s at a 5 and Dime Store? To this day, I don’t know what my mom did with my alligator that my dad bought for me. But it disappeared one day, never to return again. In an 1,000 sq.ft house. LOL I like to think there’s some 15ft creature sleeping in the crawl space just awaiting to be awakened.

    And now, I’ve got two stray dogs that adopted me. That makes three in five years after my beloved labs died. And for whatever reason, these two hounds have decided I’m the ‘Cat’s Meow.’ So did my other stray before he was tragically killed. They never leave my side. This last one is so strong, he’s really hard to control. They ran us out of the ‘Bark Park’ for rolling a couple of very large dogs, including a German Shepherd the other day – he’s not mean; unteachable. Think of a Lab/Great Dane looking mix that can leap and run like a gazelle – the best and worst qualities of a sporting dog. Absolutely gorgeous dog.

    I was mortified and will be purchasing a pincher collar shortly.

    My aunt had Downs and when I was a child I just thought she was a big kid. I wasn’t even told she was an adult with Downs until I was older. She was sweet and determined. My grandmother was encouraged to institutionalize her (she was born in the 30’s) but she refused–an unusual move for that time.

    My aunt lived with my grandmother until my grandmother died. Then she lived with a foster mother until her own death circa 1971. She was in her early 40’s and succumbed to a respiratory illness (which I’ve been told is not unusual for folks with Downs).

    While I sadly don’t see a strong challenger to Hillary who has actually hinted at running (Webb/Sanders) I think Alfie is too pessimistic on the GOP side. If Santorum does not enter the race, Huckabee (who just quit Fox – he’s running) will tie up the evangelical vote. His recent TV stint will be a boon as I suspect he’s been better trained not to make forced errors.

    The Bush’s have a bevy of strong wealthy supporters and Jeb can get the nomination by being himself. Ultimately the GOP wants the WH back bad. If Jeb can attract a bigger tent (even pull in the Hispanics that Romney lost) he can be the nominee.

    Despite America’s supposed aversion to dynasty, I could easily see Bush v Clinton in 2016.

    The Red v Blue has a component to it that is very real and very important to our collective future.
    Jobs and overall economic development is squarely in the Red State roundhouse more so than the Blue State.     Red States like Texas as the best example have a better equality rating and is developing statewide. This would be something for Perry to find someone to help him articulate since he blurs it to hell with his social stands.

    A writer called Tom Cobern the thinking man’s Ted Cruze. Another said he was Tea Party before Tea Party was cool. He is a work horse, not a show horse. He began as an accountant and then went to medical school. He has delivered over 2,000 babies. I don’t know enough about him to understand his administrative or other skills, but he sounds better than some other probable candidates.

    I have no idea whom I would vote for today.

  289. I half heartedly agree with Ragj and Rutherford. The police officers turned their backs on DeBlasio at a funeral which was a ceremony to honor two dead men. They should not have been playing politics at such an occasion, I won’t go so far as to say it was inexcusable.

    I met Jane Fonda at the University of Iowa as she circulated around the crowd to recruit veterans for Vietnam Veterans Against the War. I shook her hand and politely declined though it was a close call. I wanted to spit in her face. Respect for the office and the occasion should remain important. Without it, we inch closer to savagery.

    This morning I had the pleasure of watching a group of young black kids tacking flyers to poles and bridge supports with the infamous picture of Brown in his cap and gown. Above the photo of our poor innocent academic was the word “GENOCIDE,” and beneath the photo were the words “This is How it Starts.”

    As I rolled my eyes, behind the kids was an older disgusted looking black adult pulling the flyers down.

    It was an interesting sight.

    R’s belief the merits of the morphed narrative of “many blacks” that supposedly “must be recognized” by our politicians is wrong headed IMO. It’s time to call bullshit what it is and move on. Any “truths” contained in the so-called message can not be helped by this whipped up racial agitation.

  303. Thanks, Ragi. De Blasio was also guilty of disrespect if he knew the majority of police officers didn’t want him there. I haven’t read numbers, but if the majority felt he was intruding, he should have stayed away with a supportive statement and explanation that this good bye was more important than individual feelings.

  304. It would not only be a fitting end to DeBlasio, but Obama Holder black racist failed oversight as well for NYC to return the Dinkins’ jungle roots.

    When the murder rates spike back to historic levels in those black communities protesting, I do hope they’ll turn to their own to police themselves. Hopefully, the NYPD will remind the families of the dead, they were persona non grata and walk away or show such indifference, they don’t show at all.

    I think people are correct in feeling the mayor has sullied and soured the relationship. I don’t think it was the majority but surely some of the turned backs meant it as a sign of respect to thee fallen. Keep in mind funerals such as these are as much about the survivors as the fallen

  306. Tex already mentioned the attack in France, so I don’t really need to go into detail. It’s all over the news, so information on it won’t be hard to find for anyone interested.

    What doesn’t seem to be all over the news is the New Year’s Day speech made by Egyptian president Al Sisi.

    He basically called out the word’s Muslims and said “This shit needs to stop. You’re antagonizing the civilized world in a fight you cannot, nor should not win, and you’re making us decent people look bad.” He essentially called for an Islamic Reformation. He called out faith leaders at all levels, from top to bottom, and all who practice the faith.

    And then he went a step further and went to the Coptic Christmas mass in Egypt, today. To put that in perspective, no Egyptian president has attended a Coptic mass in….ever.

    In what certainly is a response to his speech, Qatar kicked out the leaders of Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood from the country in an attempt to shore up relations between Qatar and Egypt, and probably between Qatar and other regional and worldwide countries.

    This is worth watching

  307. DeBlasio should resign, but not over this. Holland of France should also resign because his policies, including a huge tax are failing. French or Parisian domestic policy dictated that the police who responded to the terrorist attack arrived basically unarmed and on bicycles. Two police officers were murdered. The others had to retreat because they were out gunned.

    The terrorists escaped in a car. They had killed 12 and wounded 11 more. Had the police been armed, they might have captured or killed the terrorists and saved a few lives. Domestic media reported the terrorists spoke perfect French implying they were natives. However, French witnesses said they spoke bad French.

    I imply from DeBlasio’s statements that he wants the police to behave more like the Paris police when they try to stop a crime committed by black folk.,. Holland, like DeBlasio is a socialist who beyond the police issue employs economic policies which are bad for New York City and for France.

    They won’t resign, but I can dream.

  313. I did a bit of reading on Al Sisi. Of course, its the wiki, so there is an amble dose of salt that needs to be applied. It says he grew up in a quarter of Cairo where Christians and Jews also resided, so he’s been exposed to pluralism at a young age. While I’m sure there is a dose of politics mixed in, I wonder how much of that upbringing has motivated his recent actions.

    The guy seems to be more a nationalist than anything resembling an Islamist. He’s already started some pretty major economic reforms and looking at a major Suez project to try and get Egypt’s shit together, as far as money anyway.

    He’s got a lot of work ahead of him, but he seems to be headed in the right direction. I hope he’s the real deal.

    The commanding officer at the Russian military academy (the equivalent of a 4-star general in the U.S.) gave a lecture on Potential Problems and Military Strategy. At the end of the lecture, he asked if there were any questions.

    An officer stood up and asked, “Will there be a third world war? And will Russia take part in it?”

    The general answered both questions in the affirmative.

    Another officer asked, “Who will be the enemy?”

    The general replied, “All indications point to China.”

    Everyone in the audience was shocked. A third officer remarked, “General, we are a nation of only 150 million, compared to the 1.5 billion Chinese. Can we win at all, or even survive?”

    The general answered, “Just think about this for a moment: In modern warfare, it is not the quantity of soldiers that matters but the quality of an army’s capabilities. For example, in the Middle East we have had a few wars recently where 5 million Jews fought against 150 million Arabs, and Israel was always victorious.”

    After a small pause an officer from the back of the auditorium asked, “Do we have enough Jews?

    James, lawyers tell us that we can live in a risk-free society – all we have to do is share our money with them.

    However, the risk of things-not-invented, risks not taken, drugs not invented, machines not built, explorations not undertaken – all because of fear of lawsuit – and of course the tremendous hidden costs these impose on society – are never calculated, because all those good things DID NOT HAPPEN – and because they did not happen, they are not on the ledger.

    But they are very, very real, and god only knows their final cost.

  317. Yes, Parker, I think it is a fair comparison. If the majority of police officers and their families didn’t want DeBlasio at the funeral a classy way to handle it would have been to do as I suggested. He as the boss had a right to attend, but again he didn’t have to.

    I agree, the military I knew was a dictatorship, but our leaders and we made an unspoken bargain. They would look after us and in return, we would respect and do what was asked of us, and if possible to make them look good. If one group or the other broke the bargain moral and performance suffered. People could die.

    Its true the superior officer was THE BOSS, but especially in combat zones, his troops sometimes killed him. Fragging happened more than once.

    It is the mayor’s responsibility initiate discussions to heal the hard feelings, or New York City will suffer as surely as troops suffered under the leadership of incompetant leaders.

    I hope you watch this video if you haven’t seen similar shows. It illustrates how a wrong decision is lethal.. .

    I agree that DiBlasio shit the bed; his best move would be to admit his mistake, and even then, I doubt he will EVER be forgiven, and the police will never work effectively for him.

    Fragging – certainly one option, but I think reflects very poor training of both the fragg-er and the fragg-ee. An army without discipline is a disaster. I’m probably about fifteen years younger than you, and there is article after article out there comparing today’s US servicemen to those back then. You can do marvelous things with an all-volunteer army that you can never do with conscripts.
